ZEN AND THE ART OF SKETCH COMEDY
Turning Your Funny Ideas Into Comedy Scenes
More often than not, the biggest roadblock to good sketch (or scripted comedy) is our own brain. Writer's block (or not having funny ideas) is an illusion! This workshop will focus on techniques that ColdTowne Theater instructors use to bypass the brain's hardware and get straight to the funny. Students will also learn basic techniques of how to craft these clever ideas into scenes, and how to refine them so they are also funny to the audience. It is possible to write a sketch show that kills every single time! And it can be done quickly. This workshop will show you how.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Michael Jastroch began his comedy career as editor ‘n’ chief of NYU’s only intentionally funny publication, The Plague. While living in New Orleans, Michael worked in print media as a writer, editor, and art director and wrote and performed sketch comedy and improv with Trap Doors, ColdTowne, and ComedySportz. Michael has continued to write and perform with ColdTowne while in Austin, winning several awards for his improv including "Best Comedy Group 2008" in the Austin Chronicle Reader’s poll and the B. Iden Payne award for "Outstanding Improv Ensemble." His two person sketch group with Tami Nelson, Lovey and Lovey, won Best of Fest at the 2005 Lone Star Sketch Festival and the 2008 Frontera Fringe Festival as well as a Critic’s Pick in the 2008 Austin Chronicle Reader’s Poll. Michael is the Director of the ColdTowne Theater Mainstage sketch show. Recently, Michael was nominated for best teacher at the Austin Improv Collective Awards and the group he directs, Midnight Society, was nominated for a B. Iden Payne Theater Award. Michael has taught his improv workshops all over the country, including at the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival in Chapel Hill, NC, the Oberlin College Improv Festival and the Gila Monster Improv Fest in Tuscon, Arizona.
Bryan Roberts began his love affair with comedy in 2003, when he began writing and performing for Austin’s No Shame Theatre. Since then, he has appeared with several different sketch groups (Hoover’s Blanket, Ghetto Sketch Warlock) and improv troupes (Look Cookie, No Chaser). His most recent achivements are the award-winning improv show Guilds Of Steel, which he created and co-directed for Gnap! Theater Projects, and his position as a sketch comedy teacher in the Coldtowne Conservatory Faculty. Recently, Bryan Roberts' performance in Shanty Town Lake was lauded by the Austin Chronicle: "The mere presence of Roberts on the boards... reduced me to tears, actual tears of laughter!"
